About Viral Encephalitis

Viral encephalitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the brain. This is usually through a viral infection, and there are a number of possible causes. However, the most common cause of this disease is through insect bites from infected insects such as mosquitoes. The majority of sufferers do go on to recover, although recovery time from this disease can be lengthy. But there is a risk of permanent damage from this disease, and in some cases it can even prove fatal.

Another strain of the virus

West Nile encephalitis is a variation of this disease, and this occurs mainly in countries such as Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, in areas where insects such as mosquitoes are known to carry the virus that causes the disease.

Since 1999, the West Nile virus has also become a risk within the United States. It is caused by flaviviruses, carried by ticks and mosquitoes. Some of the symptoms relating to this virus include:

• Body and joint aches
• Fever
• Headaches
• Rash

Once the disease starts to inflame the brain tissue, it can become dangerous and even deadly. It is also worth noting that there is no actual cure for the disease, and all that doctors can do is to try and minimize on health complications for this virus.

Precautions and treatments

As with any disease or virus, the best medicine is prevention, and as the cycle normally begins with a bite from an infected insect, a good repellent is highly recommended. This can be paired with protective clothing such as longs sleeves and trousers to minimize on the chances of being bitten by an insect that has been infected by the virus. This type of disease can be uncomfortable at best and fatal at worst, so taking simple precautions to protect against infection is a small price to pay in order to avoid contracting the virus.
