West Nile Virus Symptoms

It's been just a few years since West Nile Virus symptoms first starting appearing in North America, making us aware of a new threat caused by mosquito bites. West Nile virus, or WNV, is a disease related to encephalitis that has made its way into both human and wild bird populations. Unfortunately, its presence in wild birds has made WNV unusually difficult to control.

A world health problem

WNV is now known throughout the world. The disease traveled from Africa in small pools of water caught in used tires, which were sold all over the world. The puddles housed infected mosquitoes, which proceeded to infect humans, animals and birds. The numbers of known infections for this disease are small in North America, but the statistics show a much higher infection rate in developing nations.

What are the symptoms?

In humans, the symptoms of West Nile Virus are similar to cold and flu symptoms: symptoms like skin rashes, fever, tiredness, body aches, and swollen lymph glands are common. Severe infections may also include headaches, coma, convulsions, and paralysis. However, many people infected with this encephalitis-like disease express no symptoms at all.

What can I do to protect my family?

To control WNV and protect your family's health, you must strike at its source: infected mosquitoes. Fortunately, clever humans have assembled quite an arsenal of products and machines to do just that. Chemical repellants and insecticides will always stand you in good stead, and if you want to go the mechanical route, try a bug zapper or a high-tech mosquito trap. Better yet, mix and match to determine the best control strategy for your needs. Your family's health is worth the time, effort, and money you'll spend.
